The musical offering tonight is will make all toes tap and all rednecks
smile (speaking as an Alabama redneck, I'm smiling now listening to
it) - Call me the Breeze by Lynyrd Skynyrd. 'Blues Rock' as they
say, with only 3 chords in the whole song, but lo, it doth rock. Tremendous
melodic energy and dynamism since there is almost no harmonic complexity, it's
full of solos that should be pondered by all musicians, especially pianists
and guitarists. And guitarists should study this song to learn how to
do sweet, timely fills around vocals. If we were to sum up this song in
a word I think it would be FUN, no pomposity or introspection here. Most
of the vocals are harmonized which makes us feel like a party's going
on - everybody's singin', who cares what the words are! And with
a brass section no less.
