Here's an amazing, seminal bluegrass tune from one of the most epic
and iconic male voice you'll ever hear, Doc Watson. Both Watson's
voice and guitar playing are down-to-the-roots authentic bluegrass. He
sounds like your grandpaw. The song shows off the depth in the best bluegrass,
modal harmonies (Key of D, with C, am, and Bb thrown in) and asymmetrical
meters (4/4 and 3/4) . Also notice Doc's asides during singing (whoa,
boy..they's good hosses, etc.). When listening to him sing you know
he's comfortable with his music and this song. This version of the
song is recorded with, oddly enough, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I picked
this version to post to show some of the interaction between musicians
in real settings. It's one sweet tune.
