We offer camps in performance, bass, guitar, songwriting/composition, voice, ukulele, and music theory.

Cost is $250:

  • A) Camps are open to junior high to college-aged musicians who want to grow during the summer.
  • B) Participants must already play the instrument used in the camp. No absolute beginners.
  • C) Participants must commit to practice an additional hour each day outside of the camp to develop what we've learned.

The Camps

Bass - Further your skills on the Amazing Bass! Instruction includes learning accompaniment, solos, music theory, reading charts, slap & pop, understanding chords, arpeggios, pentatonic-blues-major scales, modes, connecting the neck, licks, artificial and natural harmonics, walking bass lines, right and left hand muting, rest and free stroke, and developing compelling rhythm. Materials needed: a bass, instrument cable, notebook, and pencil.

  • Dates: July 11-14, 10:30 am - 1 pm.

Guitar - Further develop your rhythm, lead, and solo playing skills. Instruction includes chord theory (essential and extensions, power, moveable, and barre chords), lead patterns, scales and modes, connecting the neck, advanced strums, adding compelling rhythm to your playing, music theory, ear training as applied to the guitar, diagnosing technique problems, licks, and developing ad-libbing skills. Materials needed: a guitar, instrument cable, notebook, and pencil.

  • Dates: July 18-21, 10:30 am - 1 pm.

Music Theory - For students who want to improve their theory skills. Theory is about making your brain work for you, potentially cutting years off learning time. Instruction will be divided between cognitive, ear training, and sight-singing. We'll learn scales, modes, chord theory, harmonies, chords in applied music (normative, motion, and color chords), non-structural tones, form, and how to analyze and chart out songs by ear. You must already read music to take the music theory course.

  • Dates: August 15-18, 10:30 am - 1 pm.

Performance - Any style of music, instrument, or voice is welcome. Hone your performing skills and take your musicianship to the next level. You’ll perform every day and be critiqued by your fellow members. Your instructor will give detailed professional advice on how to improve your performances, both musically and in presentation. We will learn about music theory, ear-training, sight-reading, rhythm training, performance, and practice techniques and strategies. Performance camp is a wonderful way to improve your skill, and to become comfortable performing in public. Materials needed: a notebook, a pencil, your instrument or voice, any required cables to connect your instrument, and 4 or 5 songs to work on and perform for the club.

  • Dates: August 1-4, 10:30 am - 1 pm.

Songwriting/Composition - We'll learn about lyric, harmony, and melody writing, and how to make your songs reflect the ideas in your heart and mind. These lessons are ½ writing new songs or critiquing new songs and ½ understanding music theory and developing the ear to assist your writing. Understanding music theory allows the student to create excellent songs independent of others. Songwriting/composition students should already have a basic ability on a chording instrument (guitar, piano, ukulele, mandolin, etc.) to define the harmonic component of their songs. We'll listen to your songs and critique them in class. Materials needed: a notebook, pencil, music paper (can be download at www.dallasmusiclessons.com/music-paper), and songs or ideas for songs you have already written.

  • Dates: August 8 - 11, 10:30 am - 1 pm.

Voice - Students can sing in any style they choose: classical, pop, rock, country, jazz, R&B, etc. Instruction includes sight-singing, phrasing, projection, pronunciation, intonation, fluidity, range, tone quality, and emphasizes confidence in performance. Materials needed: a notebook, a pencil, and accompaniment tracks (karaoke, backing tracks) for 3 to 5 songs you'd like to sing - on CD or mp3.

  • Dates: June 20-23, 10:30 am - 1 pm.
  • July 25-28, 10:30 am - 1 pm.

Ukulele - Students will learn how to improve their rhythm, lead, and solo skills. Instruction includes essential chords and extensions, power chords, barre chords, lead and solo patterns, advanced strums, adding interest to your rhythm playing, diagnosing technique issues, licks, and how to improvise. Materials needed: a ukulele, a notebook, and pencil.
